A standing seam roof is supposed to look clean and last for decades. But a few small install mistakes can leave you with wavy panels, exposed screws, and panels at risk of blowing off. In this video, Mason Burchette from True Metal Supply walks through the most common mistakes we see on standing seam jobs and shows you how to get them right. Whether you're a contractor or a DIYer tackling your first metal roof, these are the details that separate a finished job from a fast one. The Mistakes (and the Fixes): 👉 Using an Impact Driver: Impact drivers have no torque setting, so they keep spinning until you let go. On a screw flange system like our DuraLock 100, overtightening pins the panel in place and makes oil canning worse. Use a drill set to the proper torque. The rule of thumb is that you should still fit a thumbnail under the screw head. 👉 Fastening in the Wrong Part of the Slot: Screwing at the edge of the slot means the panel can only move one way. Put the fastener in the center of the slot so the panel can shift up or down as it expands and contracts. 👉 Skipping the Hem at the Eave: Every panel needs to be notched and hemmed over the extended eave. If you skip it, you've left a 16" piece of metal open to the wind, and that's how panels get ripped off. 👉 Screwing Through Your Trim: The whole point of standing seam is concealed fasteners. Use z-channel and cleats so your trim locks on and every screw stays out of sight and away from moisture. Don't let a small detail undo a great roof.
